The Problem & Challenge

Doomscrolling is primarily sustained by FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)—the anxiety of missing cultural updates or social stimulation. Most conventional screen-time blockers rely on abrupt, punitive lockouts that frustrate users and get bypassed. The core design challenge was creating a welcoming, non-punitive bridge between mindless scrolling and conscious mental decompression.

The Psychological Trap of FOMO:

Compulsive doomscrolling is not simply poor willpower—it is heavily reinforced by FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out): the subconscious dread of social exclusion, missed cultural updates, and the anticipation of variable rewards. Conventional app blockers enforce abrupt lockouts that provoke withdrawal cravings and user resentment. ROMO inverts this paradigm by designing for Relief Of Missing Out.

02

Research & Scientific Foundations

The initiative originated in a collaborative social interaction group project exploring digital habits and compulsive behaviors. After conducting stakeholder interviews and user journey mapping, the team uncovered that high feature complexity in wellness apps caused its own form of cognitive overload. Taking these insights forward, the scope was aggressively distilled to target the critical post-scroll dopamine crash.

01 · DOPAMINE & REWARD

Addiction stems from the brain's reward pathway seeking constant stimulation. Anticipation of feedback triggers dopamine surges that reinforce repetitive infinite scrolling.

02 · GABA & DECISION-MAKING

Elevated ratios of GABA (primary inhibitory neurotransmitter) in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) impair executive cognitive control, trapping users in the loop.

03 · SLEEP PHYSIOLOGY

Blue light suppresses melatonin production, while elevated excitatory neurotransmitters (Glutamate/Glutamine) correlate with insomnia and cognitive fatigue.

The 3-Phase Friction Architecture

Instead of hard lockouts that get uninstalled, ROMO implements intentional friction designed to awaken metacognitive reflection at the precise moment of mindless overconsumption:

PHASE 1 · INTERRUPTION

Auditory & Ambient Cue

A calm, non-human notification tone or gentle voice cue ("Hey, 30 minutes have passed already") breaks the hypnotic immersion without triggering defensive annoyance.

PHASE 2 · REFLECTION

Contextual Questioning

An overlay directly over active feeds (e.g. Instagram Reels): "You've already spent 45 minutes on this app. If you keep going for another 10 minutes, what are you putting off?"

PHASE 3 · REDIRECTION

Gamification & Decompression

Presents positive streak milestones and offers immediate one-tap pathways into in-app Micro-Meditation, Reflective Journaling, or the Quiet World.

PHASE 01 · AMBIENT INTERRUPTION

Sensory Loop-Breaker

A calm sensory cue and fluid avatar surface over the feed ("Hey, 30 minutes have passed already.") without abruptly locking the device.

ROMO Phase 2: In-feed reflection modal prompt over Instagram
PHASE 02 · CONTEXTUAL REFLECTION

Cognitive Friction Overlay

A prompt card interrupts passive consumption directly in Instagram: "You've already spent 45 minutes on this app. If you keep going, what are you putting off?"

Final Prototype & Core Features

Designed a serene, focused interface centered around four tailored interventions: an ambient conversational companion ('Hello.') to gently interrupt automatic phone pickups; reflective journaling with prompt cards ('How do I feel after closing apps?') on a tactile legal pad; micro-meditations for immediate emotional regulation; and positive streak tracking that celebrates intentional disconnection.

FINAL INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE SCREENS

ROMO Home companion screen with fluid avatar and voice/chat inputs
Screen 01Ambient Companion (Home) — A calming, conversational presence welcoming the user with voice and text inputs rather than endless content feeds.
ROMO clean side drawer menu and profile
Screen 02Uncluttered Navigation — Streamlined drawer menu providing immediate access to Home, Journal, Meditation, Awards, Custom, and Quiet World.
ROMO Reflective Journal on tactile lined yellow paper
Screen 03Reflective Journaling — Nostalgic lined paper with targeted reflection prompts ('How do I feel after closing apps?') to build metacognitive awareness.
ROMO Targeted micro-meditation session selector
Screen 04Micro-Meditation — Short, actionable decompressions (Guided breathing, Deep focus, Post-screen decompression) to ease dopamine drop.
ROMO Awards, streaks, and mindful milestones
Screen 05Mindful Streaks & Awards — Positive reinforcement celebrating days of intentional disconnection and personal boundaries.
ROMO Quiet World community support feed
Screen 06Quiet World Community — Non-judgmental peer support: anonymous animal avatars, one-tap encouragement tokens ('Well Done!', +5 pt), and zero public like counts to eliminate social comparison.

Outcome & Ethical Constraints

A complete high-fidelity mobile prototype in Figma. Usability feedback praised the app's aesthetic restraint and lack of moralizing pressure, showing that replacing FOMO with ROMO (Relief Of Missing Out) empowers users to close apps with a sense of calm accomplishment.

PRIVACY & DATA MINIMIZATION

Only accesses screen duration telemetry. Strictly zero access to message contents, private chats, or personal accounts.

ETHICAL POSITIONING

Conceived as a supportive behavioral awareness companion, consciously avoiding clinical claims or replacing psychological therapy.
